The origins of Shipston Dramatic Society go back to the 1930's but activities ceased in 1939 at the outbreak of war. Then in 1954 a group of five local am dram enthusiasts met in the cosy atmosphere of the Harrow Inn in Sheep Street to revive the Society. The first production took place in the tiny village hall known as the Hostel. The stage had to be built on orange boxes, lighting was virtually non existent, and the only way to reach the dressing room was round the outside of the building and up the back stairs; so anyone with a quick change prayed for fine weather!
In the 1960's the Townsend Hall was built and has been the home of the Society ever since. Three productions a year are performed, including their popular pantomimes. A varied bill, from 17th century Restoration comedy to 20th century thrillers, from One Act Plays to Music Hall, has been produced over the past years and they still find new material in the 21st century to be presented to the delight of Shipston audiences.
